Caliph al-Mu’tasim made Samarra his capital in 836 AD, and it remained the seat of the caliphate for more than half a century.
Its Great Mosque, with the spiral Malwiya minaret built under al-Mutawakkil, anchors an Abbasid city stretching over 40 km along the Tigris. It is also home to the al-Askari shrine.
