Nineveh reached its height as the Assyrian capital under Sennacherib around 700 BC, ringed by massive walls and gates.

Thousands of clay tablets came from Ashurbanipal’s library here, including copies of the Epic of Gilgamesh. It fell in 612 BC; its mounds lie on Mosul’s east bank today.
